Connecting Clio
Go to Dashboard → Integrations, click Connect Clio. You'll be redirected to Clio to authorize. One click, 30 seconds, done.
Who should connect? A Clio admin. The integration uses the connecting user's permissions — an admin account means access to all matters across the firm. If a non-admin connects, they'll only see matters assigned to them.
MDL Match never sees your Clio password. You can disconnect at any time — access is revoked immediately.
Auto-screening new matters
After connecting, toggle Auto-screen new matters on the integrations page.
Here's what happens: every time someone at your firm creates or updates a matter in Clio, MDL Match automatically screens it against all active MDLs. No one has to remember to check. No cases slip through.
When a matter is updated — say, someone adds new intake notes — we re-screen it. But only if the text actually changed. No noise from trivial edits.
This is the whole point. That call about "stomach problems after a weight loss drug"? It gets matched to MDL-3094 (Ozempic) before anyone even opens the file. A potential $10K-$50K referral caught at intake, automatically.
Bulk-screening your caseload
Click Sync Matters to import all your open matters from Clio. This runs in the background — it handles hundreds of matters without slowing down.
- Matters you've already screened get skipped (no duplicates)
- You can safely click sync multiple times
- Each screened matter counts toward your monthly quota
What we pull from Clio
Clio's matter description field is only about 255 characters — not enough for quality matching. So we pull from six sources per matter:
- Matter description — the short summary
- Practice area — helps narrow the MDL category
- Matter notes — intake narratives, case facts, attorney observations. This is the richest source.
- Custom fields — injury type, product name, drug name — whatever your firm tracks
- Medical records — treatment details, providers (if you use Clio's PI features)
- Damages — damage descriptions, types, and amounts
The more detail in your Clio matters, the better the match quality. If your firm keeps detailed intake notes, you'll get strong results.
Results written back to Clio
After screening, four custom fields appear on the matter:
Your attorneys see the results right on the matter in Clio. No extra tabs, no context-switching.
Disconnecting
Click the disconnect icon on the integrations page. A confirmation dialog appears. When you confirm:
- MDL Match's access to Clio is revoked immediately
- Auto-screening stops, the webhook is removed
- Your existing match results are not deleted — they're still in your dashboard
You can reconnect at any time.
